Karastan Rug--Durability that Lasts
A Karastan Rug is a machine made rug that rivals hand woven rugs and is known for its top quality and durability. The Karastan Rug Company started in 1928 when textile manufacturer Marshall Field built a loom capable of recreating the detailed craftsmanship of a hand-woven rug. Called the "mystery rugs" by the trade press because of the unknown new manufacturing process, the Karastan rug company decided to roll out the rug for the 1933-34 World's Fair in Chicago.
Instead of
displaying the Karastan Rug hanging the company decided to let people
walk on it. The footprints, spilled drinks and ground in food of over
5 million people left the Karastan Rug unrecognizable. Karastan Rug
Company then cleaned half the rug so people could see durability of a
Karastan Rug. One half was so filthy it was basically unrecognizable
and the other side was cleaned so that it looked as though it was
never used. The Karastan Rug Company repeated this test at the New
York World's Trade Fair of 1939-40 with the same amazing results. The
Karastan Rug Company still has the Karastan Rug used at the 1933-34
World's Fair in Chicago.
